How to pick yourself up when happiness is abysmal

Maybe the word abysmal (adjective 1. informal; extremely bad; appalling) is too strong. Perhaps saying "when happiness isn't so much right now" would have been better, but you try squeezing all of that into one title. 

Most of us will have those days, weeks, months where things might not be all sunshine and roses for whatever reason. It could be something simple as not enjoying your current job as much as you'd like, or struggling with life for more reasons than you can count. 
But you just noticed that you haven't truly, laughed or smiled in a long time. And you haven't woken up excited to start the day in what seems like forever. When someone asks you what you see in your future, you come up blank, and your mind is always drifting off into dreams of a better life, better job, better goals. 

So basically, you're not very happy right now. And you hate it. You appreciate what you do have, and it sucks that you can't remain that way for  every hour of every day. Even if you try. 
So what now? 

Ways to pick yourself up, and turn those horrid emotions around. Even for a few hours. 

Remember this...

It's temporary. How you feel, your situation, it's temporary. With enough effort and forward thinking, things can change all too easily. You just need to remain focused on your goals and what you want. Eventually, you'll get there.
The alternative is always worse, after all. But we're all so young. We have plenty of time to change things and get exactly what we want from life. But for now, it's only temporary. 

Don't forget to take care of yourself.

In general, we should always take steps to care for ourselves in any way we can. But it's most important when you're feeling down. 
Because who else is going to take care of you, better than you? If you're regularly treating yourself to the things that make you happy, you're more likely to appreciate them. Thus, appreciating life a little more. 
They're not called "pick-me-up's" for nothing. 

What do? 

  • Give yourself a nice manicure. False nails sharpened into claws, painted pretty and all. You'll be ready to scratch a bitches eyes out the next time one looks at you wrong. #femaleempowerment? 
  • Buy some affordable flowers for yourself. Or whatever your flower alternative is. 
  • Replace that much-loved daily item with a shiny, new one. If there's a thing you need a new one of, get yourself a new one. You don't have to spend a lot, but if your daily handbag is falling apart or your watch is looking gross, don't put it off any longer. 
  • Go to the cinema. With a friend, on a date, with family, or by yourself. It doesn't matter. It's just a lovely environment and fun little thing to do. 
  • Treat yourself to some sugary goodness. Doughnuts are my favourite weekend treat. They're delicious, and I only eat them on weekends. So they're just another thing I look forward to. 
  • Make a playlist of happy songs you can listen to while you're on your the way home. 
  • Read a book you love while you're going home on a crowded train. Get lost in it. 
  • Eat something delicious and healthy for lunch. Trust me, you'll feel so good about yourself for the rest of the day.
  • Sleep. As much as you can. 
  • Take a walk in the park or forest. If there's wildlife, I DARE you to not feel happy about a cute animal. 
  • Watch a movie before bed. Curled up with your My Little Pony plushie. 
  • Travel down that "weird side" of Youtube. You know it's great. 
  • Or binge on funny/entertaining/random YT vids that pop up in your "suggested" section. Trust me. 

Chillax, bro.

When it's your time, it's YOUR time. Mistakes we all made during the day are over now. 

Unwind with Netflix, magazines, music and sleep. Take an extra five minutes in a hot shower, and an extra two to properly wash your hair. 

Spend your evenings and weekends doing nothing but things that make you feel happy and relaxed.

Girl, if there's one thing I know, it's that you don't need to be spending your weekends partying and bringing SUPER FAB, FUN stories to work on Monday. 

If staying in bed all day makes you feel good, do it.

  1. I clicked on this post because I was feeling pretty shit but now I definitely have my heart set on doing a few of these things to make me feel better. First off is I'm getting myself some cookies and going down the weird side of YouTube!

    1. Omg that's my fave thing to do!! I had to put it in my list bc it never fails to take my mind off everything else, also sweet treats definitely help. Like, a lot hahaha.

  2. This is such a great list. I'm very familiar with having days where I just feel down down down. I just want to curl up in a ball and have a little cry. I actually got a cat two months ago, and maybe I'm just too busy to be sad, but I haven't had any days that are like that since little Coco has come into my life. I'm so grateful to the little fluff.

    1. Omg why didn't I think to put "CAT" on this list?!? Cats are so fab for making you feel lovely, I'll come home and my mr spoilt cat will be there to meow and ask for pets and love and awww, cheers you right up! They have a way of making all your "problems" seem insignificant because the cat loves you and wants food so all is right in the world haha!
